1040 Ugh part 3

Well so much for my John Wayne style tax filing (see 14 and 15 April entries): Uncle Sam wrote back to tell Rheagan and I that we had misfiled our 2003 tax return. What is more, Uncle S took it upon himself to correct the return for us! Now our refund is going to be a third bigger than we expected. Craziness! How often is it that Uncle S makes after-the-fact corrections in the citizen’s favor? I am truly surprised…and pleased (of course). God Bless America!

Then again, here we are in a big budget crises and Uncle Sam is paying someone to make sure that I pay less taxes than expected....

Wow, at least it was in your favor. I got a letter from a collection agency a few months ago on behalf of the state of Virginia. They said we owed over $3,000 for the year 2000! I didn't even live in Virginia in the year 2000! But I lived there for three months in 1999. And, I'm guessing, they saw that I had paid VA taxes in 1999, and had paid federal taxes in 2000, and put 2 and 2 together and got 5 -- I must have avoided my 2000 state taxes! After a couple of weeks of major heartache, we finally got it worked out. But it really, really sucked.
